The legendary NEOGEO 2D action is back and its on the Android. Yes the beloved popular franchise is back is another installment titled Metal Slug 3. But does this 3 installment any better than it predecessor? Let us find out, so read on fellow gamers.
Now for those of you who may be new to playing Metal Slug, this game is a classic shoot’em up action game. The game is like the classic Contra on the NES with a cartoon twist to it. And as you can see the graphics style is great, and the gameplay is simple that even a three-year old could play it.
When you first play the game, you’ll notice that it plays just like Contra use the joystick to aim a weapon and move, and buttons to jump, shoot, and use special abilities. Enemies can kill your character in one shot, which quickly turns the game into a test of survival; three lives and three continues will only get you so far. Everyday bad guys drop quickly to a hail of bullets, but prolonged boss fights can be particularly harrowing. Power-ups pepper levels and provide access to limited-use bombs and bigger guns to clear a path to the end.
There is a variety of gameplay modes to pick from. On the single player side, there’s the classic arcade mode that simply gets players to plow as far ahead as possible with a limited number of lives. The mission mode allows players to skip ahead to one of the five chapters, so long as they’ve been unlocked through previous playthroughs. And then here’s a Bluetooth multiplayer mode so that two buddies can open fire in co-op mode.
The graphics have remained totally unchanged. The character graphics in the character select screen has been redone to have a more modern and anime look to it, but the in-game graphics are exactly the same. So you get the same graphics that have a nice styling, but ultimately looks very low-res especially by today’s standards. And as for the gameplay, fans of the series will be glad to hear that it is pretty much the same, and yes it is a very good thing.
And this is where the good news ends, and just when you thought that this game would be perfect. The controls are the biggest issue in this game. You will have a 10 directional D-pad for your characters movement on the lower left side, and on the lower right side you will have three action-buttons, to jump, shoot and to throw bombs. The problem is not with the action buttons, the problem is with the D-Pad, as the touch controls are not fit to handle 10-direction accurately. Now if you are concentrating on the game screen, you won’t have time to look where your fingers are. More often than not, you’ll miss the button you really want to press.
Metal Slug 3′s graphics and gameplay are fine and stay true to the series, but I really wish I could say the same for the controls. How could the developers overlook an important factor of the game, such as the controls? Well if you don’t mind spending some money, the game is $3.55 at the Google Play Store. Happy Gaming Gamers.
